of carmageddon appear to be free of traffic jams, for ten miles. one of the busier freeways in los angeles is çóclose. a repeat of what happened last year. there along the 405, how is it looking? >> reporter: well, so far, they are actually saying carmageddon two, to quote one of the fire chiefs is a very good sequel, so thumbs up, so far. and what you're seeing here is really what carmageddon is, the ten-mile stretch here of the freeway. you're talking all of this freeway, an essential artery here in los angeles, completely empty. there are no cars. you know how extraordinary this is. and then if you look up the 405 freeway you will see exactly why the 405 has had to shut down. this is the mulholland bridge, and the northern part of that has to come down. it has to be torn down to make way, at least that section, make way for an extra car pool lane. when the car pool lane is finished for this extra stretch of 405, all the way through, it will be 73 miles of car pool lane, the longest one in the world. but carmageddon, specifically meaning with the shutdown of 405, there is more traffic on all t

this is the 101 freeway. they're heading north basically out of los angeles toward calabasas and the san fernando valley there. they have been followed by police. we can't tell you much in the way of details here, except they have refused to stop the heeds of l.a. police and the county officials there. but as you might imagine, it's just before 9:00 a.m. in los angeles, which is normally gridlock, bumper-to-bumper traffic. it is amazing that this slow speed has has gone on as long as it has, far as far as it has given all the traffic in southern california. don't know why police are following and don't know if they suspect any prior criminal offense here or, if the passenger is voluntary or a hostage. just don't have those details but we're going to continue to follow what's happening in southern california. and we'll get you the details. jenna: we'll be back to that in just a moment. right now demanding answers from the white house on the attack in libya that killed four americans. congressional republicans and democrats sending a letter to president obama requesting a briefing in washington as

ignited widespread protests throughout the muslim world. los angeles deputies paraded the man out of his southern california home early this morning. authorities say the man wrapped in a towel, then wanted to question him about possible probation violation. he served prison time for bank fraud and is banned from using a computer. the film "innocence of muslims" was uploaded to youtube. the man is not in custody or under arrest. shed more light behind the controversial film, joined by cnn's miguel marquez. why take him in for questioning now? what's with the timing in all of this? >> this is all part of the federal government's effort to investigate his parole -- his -- terms of his parole. and probation. he's on five years supervised probation after being convicted of bank fraud in 2010. one of 26 conditions that go along with that probation and one of them is that he's not allowed to use any devices or access the internet without first informing his parole officer, having his parole officer sign off on that device or in way he's using the internet. i mean, there are certain things like

's nischelle turner is live in los angeles. what did unthink? any bad calls? >> reporter: well, it depends on who you're rooting for basically, john, you know, yes, the refs -- the real refs got a standing ovation last night and everyone was breathing a sigh of relief that they were back on the field but you know what, it did not take long for the boo birds to come out. it was about four minutes into the game in the first quarter when the refs made a holding call on the ravens, and you heard the boo birds so it was like, we're glad you're back, welcome back, we don't like your call, and, of course, we knew that we were going to hear that. i'm not sure i would say there were bad calls but when you're the home crowd and the call goes against your team there's never a call that you like. here's the benchmark i think of determining whether it was a successful first outing back for the regular refs. you didn't really notice that they were there and that is a good thing. >> it sure is. roger goodell claims it wasn't that debacle monday night that got them to the table finally to reach a deal. is

bail. he is in a federal lockup this morning today here in los angeles, and something i found quite interesting. you mentioned that court hearing, suzanne. when the judge said, so, what is your name. the judge said what did you say? and he said mark bassely. even in that hearing he wasn't sure what name he wanted to use. >> he was confused. 17 names. he was confused. his attorney says that he believes that his safety could be at risk. why? >> the reason why is that according to his attorney, you think about all of this anger that's been inflamed around the world because of this film and what his attorney says is in the federal prison. we're looking at a population with a significantly large muslim background, and so that's why he says that he believes that putting his client in that federal lockup could pose a risk for his own safety, but the prosecution is saying he is just going to be kept separate from the general population, and the judge eventually siding with the prosecution. >> thank you. >>> here's what we're working on for this hour. an exciting new find on mars. the martia
